Anime review #1: Corpse Party-Tortured Souls

Corpse Party: Tortured souls is a 4-episode anime based off of the popular Corpse Party video game series. It follows a group of high school students and their teacher who get trapped inside a haunted elementary school that happens to be in an alternate dimension, all because they performed a friendship charm incorrectly (I know, confusing right?). This anime is a mystery/slasher story.

First Impression: (Since this show is only four episodes long, I will base my first impression off of the first episode.)- After watching the first episode, I had quite a few conflicting thoughts about both humanity and the human mind. Two best friends, Seiko and Naomi, get into a fight (typical in stressful situations) and Seiko takes off running down the halls. It's needless to say that she died first. When Naomi came looking to apologize to Seiko, she saw Seiko had been killed rather gruesomely. Anyway, it makes you think twice about getting mad at your friends.

Animation: The animation matched the mood very well. The blood and guts were pretty realistic looking, but they were a bit over-the-top. They were kind of final destination-ish. The deaths were over the top, but incredibly animated. Overall, this show has some of the smoothest animation I have seen in a while, but it is still dark and gritty enough to pass the mood off effectively.

Music: For the most part, the music was spot on and matched both the mood and the overall feel of the scenes, however I do have a bone to pick with the opening theme. It's a good song, but I felt that it doesn't match the clips they put in it or really match the mood of the series. To me, it just feels that it doesn't fit. The ending on the other hand is a brighter song, but it's a nice break from the blood, guts, and screams. I guess that was the point behind the opening (to ease you into the excessive blood and gore, I suppose). Nonetheless, the music was very good and the music from the show matched the mood perfectly. It was sort of an eerie chorus with piano and strings which added to the overall intensity of the series.

Content: Because of the nature of this anime, I've touched upon this in the previous two sections, but to be completely objective, this show reminds me a whole lot of the 'Final Destination' movies. Blood and guts almost spraying everywhere, over-the-top death scenes, and on top of that, the plot line took a back seat until the third episode. Nonetheless, I did come into this knowing it was a slasher-type series and expecting this kind of thing, so I wasn't disappointed at all. All that I can really say is: be ready to cringe a lot because there are some pretty vicious killings in this show.

Final Impression: After completing the series and seeing how it ends, I have to admit that I was surprised by the ending. Without giving spoilers it's hard to describe, so, i'll just say that there was a plot twist that you wouldn't expect (I know, suspenseful right? Go watch the show to find out). Overall, I liked this show from the animation to the story (which you have to really pay attention to understand). Good show, fun to watch, not for the squeamish or for little kids.

Rating: My content rating is R. Although in Japan, kids might watch this kind of stuff, in America, showing this to a kid may scar them mentally, so I wouldn't suggest watching this with your younger siblings. And my show rating is: Recommended. Not the greatest show that I have watched, but nonetheless, a good watch. Again, DO NOT SHOW THIS TO YOUNG CHILDREN UNLESS YOU WANT TO SCAR THEM FOR LIFE. THIS SHOW IS EXTREMELY VIOLENT AND BLOODY AND THE DEATHS ARE GRUESOME. THIS SHOW MAY DESTROY ANY INNOCENCE LEFT IN THE MIND OF A SMALL CHILD.
Anyway, thanks for reading, the next review should be up in a week.
